David's Restaurant Good Choice for Causal Friday Night
David's Restaurant, in Monument Square (Portland, Maine), is a place I have visited many times. By now, I have have tasted every item on the menu; and the ones that disappeared as well. David's continues to be a place I will always consider, especially after last week's meal.
Unfortunately, the atmosphere was dull as not many tables were occupied. I like to eat late, so perhaps most people had cleared out before I walked in - around 9 pm. I enjoy sitting at the bar and talking to random people including the bar-keep; this time it was Nick, another new face.
David's is not my first choice in the summer time, so almost three months passed since my last meal here, which was disappointing. My intention this evening was drinks and appetizers, followed by dinner elsewhere. However, seeing Neil in the kitchen and some good looking plates on a few tables, the appetizers were completed with a full meal.
We had the fresh shucked oysters, a little boring, served with what felt like store-bought cocktail sauce. Oysters "David" Rockefeller were soon to follow, which were rich and creamy. Not a bad twist on a classic dish. Lobster cakes are good, but nothing memorable. As far as the meal we both went with the mixed grill; the seafood and steak were perfectly prepared. We had random sides selected for us: vegetables, mashed potato, asparagus, and risotto. This time the risotto had a descent texture and was rather pleasant.
David's Restaurant has it's up and downs, but one thing is for sure: they are fully capable of satisfying customers. Perhaps a more seasonal menu would bring me in more frequently.
